MOLINE, Ill. (April 1, 2015) — Loggers need machines that work as long and hard as they do, and John Deere is at the forefront in developing equipment solutions to make their job easier – and more productive – than ever before through the launch of new L-Series Wheeled Feller Bunchers and Skidders. These game-changing machines are now available and represent John Deere’s most reliable and productive machines ever. The new Wheeled Feller Bunchers redefine uptime, productivity and low daily operating costs, and will change expectations of what a logging operation can accomplish. The introduction of the L-Series also marks the celebration of 50 years of manufacturing skidders for John Deere, a major manufacturing milestone that demonstrates John Deere’s forward thinking and ongoing commitment to developing solutions for the type of challenges loggers face in the woods.

To develop the L-Series machines, John Deere collected invaluable input from loggers and dealers around the world through Customer and Dealer Advocacy Groups (CAG and DAG). The CAGand DAG provided real-world insights on what works and what doesn’t through the lens of the John Deere’s customers. Over 250,000 engineering hours, combined with thousands of hours of testing in everyday, real-world conditions, ensure that John Deere has built a forestry machines that never quits.
The L-Series Wheeled Feller Bunchers boast several productivity-enhancing features that provide the muscle, yet finesse needed to jumpstart the flow of wood to the landing on a jobsite. Highlights include:
Best-in-class power-to-weight ratio – the L-Series boast significantly more horsepower for superb responsiveness. This ensures steady multifunction performance in wet or hilly locations.
One-button Quick Dump – Operators simply press a button to open both accumulating and grab arms simultaneously, releasing trees from the pocket. Head-tilt and arm functions are combined into a single, smooth motion. This feature minimizes fatigue, while improving productivity.
More stability – Optimal weight distribution and longer wheelbase improve balance for better stability when climbing hills and controlling trees.
Enhanced lighting options – Six high-intensity halogen lights are standard when loggers need to extend their workday beyond daylight.
Validated by over 11,500 hours of testing in real-world conditions, the L-Series Skidders are built for the way loggers work, and they seem to agree:
“Over the last few years, we’ve seen our brainstorms and ideas transformed into a machine that has conformed to the high standards we set. We helped create a machine that’s even more durable, more efficient and more operator friendly than we ever imagined.” – Jack McFarland, McFarland Timber, Winnfield, Louisiana
“They’ve done pretty much everything we discussed. A big improvement is the size of the cab. Loggers will work longer and happier without strain.” – Roger Ferguson, Sika Logging, Taupo, New Zealand.
The new operator station on all L-Series machines was designed by loggers for loggers. The best-in-class cab is 25 percent roomier and more than 50 percent quieter than John Deere’s previous models. Other fatigue beating comforts include a more efficient HVAC system, more ergonomic controls and plenty of storage space. Finally, an optional rotating seat with joystick steering helps reduce strain on the back and neck for less fatigue.
John Deere’s L-Series Wheeled Feller Bunchers are now available in the United States in a 643L and 843L model, while the L-Series Skidders are available in North America in 640L, 648L, 748L, 848L and 948L models.
